Each week GOPAC will spotlight a candidate running for election. This weeks Candidate in the spotlight is Dino Rossi. In 2004 Dino was twice certified as winner of the governor’s race, on the initial count and a mandatory machine recount. He then lost on a second recount, a hand recount. A court case ensued where his opponent was officially declared the winner. It ended up being the closest and perhaps most memorable governor’s race in state history. Dino, with careful consideration with his family and friends, has decided to run for governor again.

A run for governor in 2004
Dino announced his plan to run for governor in November 2004 and resigned from the state Senate shortly thereafter. The rest, as they say, is history.

He was twice certified as winner of the governor’s race – on the initial count and a mandatory machine recount. He then lost on a second recount – a hand recount. A court case ensued. Christine Gregoire was officially declared the winner. It ended up being the closest and perhaps most memorable governor’s race in state history.

It’s important for people to draw their own conclusions about 2004. It’s clear that it left some people very upset. But what Dino tells them is this: Don’t give up – and please continue to participate in and watch the election process closely.

Several important election reforms came about because of the 2004 election. For example, our Secretary of State created a statewide voter database for the first time. Over 176,000 dead, double and illegal felon voters have removed from the voter rolls.

Since 2004
After the 2004 election, Dino was often asked, “What have you been up to?”

Dino tells them he has remained active in the commercial real estate business. He also drove his children to school (his wife says he has earned the carpool badge of honor), helped them with their homework and led family trips to our state parks.

He wrote a book about leadership – one he’s hoping you will read if you haven’t already.

His friend Jay Buhner and him also became part owners of the Everett Aqua Sox minor league baseball team.

He became a Board Member with the Special Olympics of Washington, and joined the Dean’s Advisory Board at the Seattle University School of Business and Economics.

He’s also proud to have started the Forward Washington Foundation – a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to issues affecting Washington, its citizens and its economy.

And finally, Dino watched what was going on in our state government closely. He chose not to be a constant critic of Christine Gregoire for three years – hoping she would deliver on the promises she made as a candidate. But what He saw was broken promises.

He then decided he was through watching and hoping – and after careful consideration with his family and friends, he decided he would run for governor.

Today
Dino is now traveling throughout Washington explaining why it’s important to hold Christine Gregoire accountable for her broken promises. We all know the old way of state government is simply not working. It’s time for new leadership – and this means opening up the windows in Olympia and letting the air out.

It’s his hope to meet you somewhere on the campaign trail and you can share with him your thoughts on state government. And he hope’s you can take the time to learn more about himself and his ideas on how we can improve Washington.
