Each week GOPAC will spotlight a candidate running for election. This weeks Candidate in the spotlight is Maine's Andre Cushing.

As a life-long Mainer, small business owner, and a parent of three children, Andre Cushing is concerned that Maine is not focusing on the areas that have historically made it strong and vibrant. Instead the government is placing an immense burden upon its citizens and the businesses that offer good jobs. The results are restricting the creativity and resources citizens need to get Maine moving again. This course must change; Mainers need good people who will go to Augusta to seek better solutions to the problems facing them and their communities.

Cushing believes we need government to focus on that which it can and must do and not get into areas in which it does not need to be.

Andre Cushing and his wife, Gwen, have three children. He is currently a real estate agent and also has a home construction business. Previously, he owned and operated other small businesses in Maine. These experiences have given him an understanding of many of the issues that affect those who have chosen to live and work in Maine. It has also given Cushing an appreciation for the need to be service oriented, something that is important in being a good representative.

Cushing credits his experience with GOPAC in helping with his successful effort to recruit Republican candidates for the Maine legislature over the last three election cycles. The information received through GOPAC tapes and support materials were extremely helpful in Maine Republicans coming within two seats of capturing the majority in the 2004 election cycle.

Andre Cushing believes it is important to give something back to the community that has given so much to him. To that end, he has had the pleasure of being involved with numerous civic organizations including Hampden Kiwanis, Director of Bangor Jaycees and Rotary Club, President of EMMC Children’s Miracle Network Board, Eastern Maine Community College Foundation, President of Black Bear United Football Club, Hampden Town Council and Hampden Comprehensive Plan Review Committee.

Cushing has a broad and unique understanding of the issues that impact many communities in Central Maine. He has gained this knowledge from his experience as a town councilor in two communities where he was a member of both a charter review committee and land use review committee. His current service on the following Hampden Committees also strengthens his understanding of these issues and has prepared him to help the state of Maine.
