Each week GOPAC will spotlight a candidate running for election. This weeks Candidate in the spotlight is Colorado's Shawn Mitchell.
Shawn Mitchell was elected to the Colorado Senate in 2004, after serving three terms in the Colorado House of Representatives. Mitchell started his legislative service by winning a seat that had been controlled by Democrats for a decade. In 1999, the Associated Press Capitol Bureau named Mitchell outstanding new legislator, while the Denver Post Capitol Poll ranked Senator Mitchell as one of Colorado’s top ten lawmakers.
Consistently endorsed by groups that are pro-family, pro-2nd amendment, and pro-economic liberty, Senator Mitchell faces a tough campaign. He is being targeted by wealthy Democratic donors who have spent heavily in recent years to turn Colorado from a red state to a purple state. Democratic activists are reportedly angered by Mitchell’s defense of traditional marriage and family and his effective opposition to Governor Bill Ritter’s liberal economic agenda.
Previously, Mitchell served as Special Counsel to Colorado Attorney General Gale Norton, serving as one of Norton’s top advisors prior to her becoming the Secretary of the Interior for the Bush Administration. Throughout his successful legislative career, Senator Mitchell has been a leading advocate against eminent domain abuse and unreasonable seizure of private property, passing several laws to protect property owners from government overreach.
Mitchell received his Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University, where he graduated magna cum laude, and then went on to earn his law degree at the University of California at Berkeley. He served three years on the Rocky Mountain News Board of Editorial Contributors and writes and speaks often on issues of policy, law, and society. Mitchell is also currently serving as an instructor at the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado, where he lectures on topics in government, politics, and policy.
Shawn and his wife Yvette live in Broomfield with their seven children. They are active in their church and schools. Shawn’s hobbies include rock climbing and vegetable gardening. Senator Mitchell is currently running for re-election this year.
