Each week GOPAC will spotlight a candidate running for election. This weeks Candidate in the spotlight is North Dakota’s State Treasurer Kelly Schmidt. Since taking office, Schmidt has worked to promote localized economic development through a new initiative called BidND. BidND has placed millions of dollars in over 60 North Dakota communities, garnering additional interest income for the state. She has served the people of North Dakota exceptionally well and needs to be reelected in November.
Kelly Schmidt was elected North Dakota’s 33rd State Treasurer in November of 2004.
Since taking office, Schmidt has looked for cost savings and has successfully utilized new efficiencies in the Treasurer’s Office. She has worked to promote localized economic development, through an initiative called BidND. Through a competitive bid process, certificates of deposit are purchased from North Dakota financial institutions which lend these dollars back into their communities, fostering economic growth. BidND has placed millions of dollars in over 60 North Dakota communities, garnering additional interest income for the state.
Through this initiative and effective cash management, $36.5 million in interest income was contributed to the state’s general fund for the 2005-07 biennium compared to $6 million in the 2003-05 biennium.
As State Treasurer, Schmidt serves as a member of the North Dakota State Investment Board, the Teachers Fund for Retirement Board (TFFR), North Dakota Board of Tax Equalization, North Dakota State Historical Society, and the North Dakota Board of University and School Lands. She is also a member of the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) where she serves as Regional Vice President representing the Midwest on the executive committee. She currently serves as Chair of the NAST Foundation which oversees the educational activities of the foundation including the National Institute for Public Finance the New Treasurers Symposium, and initiatives to promote financial literacy.
Schmidt has a time long record of dedicated community service:
· Member of the Inter Service Family Assistance Committee (ISFAC) a voluntary military cooperative partnership organized to provide multi-service networking for military members and their families.
· President of the ND Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.
· Trustee of the North Dakota State Historical Board Foundation.
· Republican National Committee Women’s Advisory Board.
· Past president of the Mandan Kiwanis and a Kiwanian of the Year; Past Lt. Governor for her Kiwanis region.
· 10 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
· Life member of the AMVets Auxiliary.
· Trustee of the Spirit of Life Parish.
· She is a member of her local PTO and Business and Professional Women.
Kelly and her husband, Chuck, have four sons and reside in Mandan, ND.
