Each week GOPAC will spotlight a candidate running for election. This week's Candidate in the spotlight is Tennessee State Senator Jim Tracy. Tracy represents the 16th Senatorial District in the Tennessee State Senate. The district consists of most of Rutherford County and all of Bedford and Moore Counties in Tennessee. Tracy is the chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee and serves on other committees including the Education Committee, the State and Local Government Committee, the Commission on Aging and Disability, and the Long Term Care Advisory Council. Sen. Tracy has been a key leader on important issues such as the economy and education. He has worked across party lines to bring change to the State Senate on issues that make a difference in the lives of the people in his district.
On the economy, Tracy supports lower taxes and less government to create more, high paying jobs in the 16th District. The key to a successful economy is good jobs, quality infrastructure, and a world class education system. Tracy is strongly against a state income tax and is proud to have voted to cut the sales tax on food in 2007. Sen. Tracy was also a leader against a $200 million tax increase last year.
On education, Tracy works to ensure that teachers and students have the resources they need to be successful. That means ensuring that education dollars are going directly to the classroom and that we are doing all that we can to increase parental involvement. Tracy’s leadership on the Senate Education Committee earned him the 2007 Tennessee School Boards Association Legislative Award and the 2008 Rutherford Education Association’s Friend of Education Award. From 1996-2004, he was a member of the Bedford County Board of Education, serving as vice-chairman for five years.
Sen. Tracy is a 1978 graduate of The University of Tennessee at Martin with a degree in Agriculture Education. Sen. Tracy and his wife, Trena, have been married for 32 years and have three sons, Chad, Craig, and Connor. He is the owner of Jim Tracy Insurance in Shelbyville, TN and Murfreesboro, TN and is a deacon at Fairlane Church of Christ in Shelbyville. Sen. Tracy has also been a TSSAA and NCAA basketball official for over 15 years.
