Each week GOPAC will spotlight a candidate running for election. This week’s candidate is Attorney General Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania.

As Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement officer, Attorney General Tom Corbett continues to uphold the oath he made of protecting the citizens of our great Commonwealth. He has worked tirelessly during his first term by delivering on the public safety promises he made while campaigning four years ago.

One of Tom’s first actions was the fulfillment of his promise to establish a Child Predator Unit to pursue those who would use the computer to prey on our children. Considered to be one of the best of its kind in the country, Tom Corbett’s Child Predator Unit has arrested almost 170 child predators and has a 100% conviction rate. Believing that education of online safety is just as important, Tom added an educational component to the unit called Operation Safe Surf, which has informed over 140,000 parents, students and teachers about the threat posed by online predators.

Tom also recognized the need to protect senior citizens in Pennsylvania, which possesses one of the highest percentages of elderly residents in the nation. He created an Elder Abuse Unit that works every day to prevent scam artists and abusive individuals from targeting elderly Pennsylvanians for financial exploitation, physical abuse or neglect. This unit has fielded thousands of complaints on issues ranging from telemarketing to criminal fraud and abuse. Numerous arrests have been made by this unit and many educational outreach events have been conducted, teaching seniors and their families about the latest scams.

Tom has been an effective watchdog over government officials, agencies and employees by making a serious commitment to protecting the public trust. He created a Public Corruption Unit in 2006, which has prosecuted local, county and state officials for embezzling funds and using taxpayer dollars for campaign work. He vows to continue this fight and will seek out and prosecute anyone who will violate the law and betray the trust of Pennsylvanians.

Early in his career as a prosecutor, Tom believed that in order for communities to thrive, the safety of its citizens must be of primary importance. That is why Tom vowed to aggressively fight drugs and violent gangs in neighborhoods across Pennsylvania. To date, he has successfully arrested over 2,400 drug dealers and intercepted millions of dollars worth of drugs.
